With reference to my despatch 0. 247 of

the 13th instant on the subject of the opium

situstios in thing, i have the honour to enelors

barowith copy of a letter which I have addressed

to the Governor of Longkong, respecting the Agree-

ment of staber 1st, last between the upium Combine

and the Chinese (overment,

The opium merchants desire that the Chinese

Goverment should be pressed to perfon. ite ob-

ligations under this Agrement, and my letter to

Sir Henry Lay explains the rozvon why i find it

difficult to accede to their request.
